Texas A&M University-Commerce has hired David Bailiff as its 20th headd football coach, as announce Sunday by University President Dr. Mark Rudin and director of athletics Tim McMurray.

Bailiff will officially be introduced as the Lions’ head coach at a pair of events on Wednesday, December 12, at 11 a.m., Bailiff will meet with Dallas-area media and constituents at Mckinney ISD Stadium, site of NCAA Division II National Championship Game. At 3 p.m., Bailiff will be introduced to the Commerce community with an event in the Sam Rayburn Student Center.

“During our comprehensive search process, David Bailiff emerged as an exceptional leader of men who exemplifies our Best in Class mission,” noted McMurray. “We had seven key pillars during our search – integrity and commitment to compliance, initiatives for student-athlete success, strategic recruiting based within the Texas footprint, a championship vision, an inclusive leadership style, excellent collaboration with campus partners, and demonstrated ability to engage our alumni and community. With David Bailiff’s energy, passion, and ability to connect with student-athletes, we checked all our boxes.”

Bailiff was the head coach at Texas State University from 2004-06 and at Rice University from 2007-17. The Lions’ 2019 season will be Bailiff’s 15th season as a collegiate head coach.

In his tenure as a collegiate head coach, Bailiff has led a team to the NCAA Division I National Semifinals and has made five total postseason appearances with a 5-2 postseason record. The 2005 Texas State Bobcats were Division I National Semifinalists, and Bailiff led the Rice Owls to four bowls with a 3-1 record in those games.

Bailiff has led teams to 10-win seasons in three seasons (one at Texas State, two at Rice). Under his watch, the Owls had the most wins in school history over a two (18), three (25), and four (30) year periods. Rice’s 18-9 mark from 2013-14 was the second-best of any FBS program in Texas.

“I am so thrilled to be the 20th head coach in the history of the school. I’m an old Lone Star Conference guy, and that’s where my roots are in college football,” Bailiff said. “It’s great and exciting what coach Carthel built here, and it’s the first job I’ve had where you’ve got to look at the blueprint and continue building the momentum on something great he’s already got started.”
